Tasmania is home to some of the world's best wild trout fisheries. The Great Western Tiers and Meander Valley boasts many outstanding lakes, lagoons, rivers and streams where there is an abundance of Brown, Brook and Rainbow trout.
The Huntsman Lake, close to the township of Meander, is the newest fishery of the region and there is great anticipation about the Huntsman becoming a hot spot for the serious angler. Formed as a result of the Meander Dam in 2007, the lake's natural trout population was initially supplemented by 1,000 wild brown trout.
Bushy Lagoon, located just 20 kilometres north of Westbury has proved to be a solid performer over many years. This small, sheltered lagoon has good boat and shore access, and has the potential to provide good results for the patient angler.
Four Springs Lake is just 14 kilometres from the small township of Hagley, and has proved to be a popular lake in recent times. Stocked with Rainbow and Brown trout, this fishery tends to fish very well in the early part of the season and has very good parking and access for boat owners.
There are many other lakes in the central highlands of Tasmania which are in close proximity to the Great Western Tiers. As well as these, there is an abundance of rivers and tributaries that can be accessed from public areas or from farms with the permission of owners.
