Westbury is an attractive town renowned for its English country character, unique Village Green and Town Common, hawthorn hedges, historic buildings, and friendly people. 

It is 30 minutes drive from Launceston and 45 minutes from Devonport. 

Laid out on a grand scale in 1828, Lt Govenor Arthur believed Westbury would develop into the main gateway to Tasmanias north-west. Westbury flourished during the glorious coaching era, and subsequently with the arrival of the Western railway in 1871. 

Today the legacy of Westburys 19th century rural and town settlement embraces a wonderful range of colonial architecture, rich farmland, and an absorbing history. 

Westbury has many interesting historic buildings which have been listed on the Historical Westbury tear-off map which visitors can use for self-guided walking or cycling tours.  This map can be found at tourism enterprises in Westbury and at the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre in Deloraine. 

The Holy Trinity Church is a prominent feature of the main street and the White House was built in 1846.  The Westbury Hotel, Fitzpatricks Inn, the Old Rectory, and the Old Coaching Inn are other buildings worth a visit. 

The Westbury Maze and Tearooms provides a pleasant diversion while the Village Green is a great place for a picnic under magnificent deciduous trees.  Look for the maypole and stocks for the wayward citizens. 

Surrounded by colonial buildings, the Village Green is a great place to roam and imagine what it was like for the soldiers and convicts in the early days.

Westbury is also host to a number of festivals throughout the year. In March is the Westbury St Patricks (Irish) Festival - come and experience Irish music and dance at its best. 

The Tasmanian History Fayre is held in September, focusing on everything you need to know about local history and tracing your ancestors.
